The early 70’s and both the Mali and Guinean governments are state sponsoring music with the formation of ‘orchestres’ to promote traditional music. This was in an effort to counter act the effects of colonialism. Although the music had a solidl base of traditional rhythms the adaption of the electric guitar produced somethingthat was both traditional but also new and exciting.  This compilation is drawn from various CD’s and includes five tracks from the Rail Band with Salif Keita on vocals. His replacement as lead vocalist Kasse Mady is here with National Bandema this along with the other tracks shows that the Rail Band didn’t have it all their own way. This can be seen as a companion piece to my other torrent Legendary Bands of Mali, and again is a must for fans and those interested in West African music.
